What is a Marquise-Cut Diamond?
A Marquise-cut diamond is a distinctive diamond shape characterized by its elongated, oval-like silhouette with pointed ends. It is sometimes referred to as a “navette cut,” which means “little boat” in French, due to its boat-like appearance.
Key Features:
- Shape: Symmetrical, elongated, with two pointed ends.
- Facets: Typically has 58 facets, similar to a round brilliant cut, which enhances its brilliance and sparkle.
- Length-to-Width Ratio: Ideal ratios range from 1.75:1 to 2.25:1, depending on personal preference.
Benefits:
- Appearance: Its elongated shape can make fingers look longer and slimmer, making it a popular choice for rings.
- Carat Weight: The shape gives the illusion of a larger size compared to other cuts of the same carat weight.
- Style: The marquise cut has a vintage and elegant aesthetic, often associated with classic and romantic designs.
History:
The marquise cut dates back to the 18th century and was reportedly commissioned by King Louis XV of France, inspired by the smile of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour.
This cut remains a timeless choice for engagement rings and other fine jewelry, offering a blend of sophistication and sparkle.
During this era, diamond cutters worked by hand to extract the stone from the rough, meticulously measuring, cleaving, and shaping it. Since candlelight was the main source of illumination, diamonds were crafted to enhance their brilliance in that type of soft, romantic light.
Popular throughout the Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco periods, old European cut diamonds are the predecessors of today’s modern round brilliants. When shopping for a ring in this style, you’ll often encounter vintage and Art Deco influences, creating a timeless and captivating look for engagement rings.
