Choosing the Perfect Lab-grown Diamond-A Buyers Guide
For consumers interested in lab-grown diamonds, choosing the perfect lab-grown diamond in important. Understanding how to select the perfect lab diamond ensures maximum value and satisfaction.
Evaluating the Quality by way of the 4C’s
Just like natural mined-diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are graded according to the 4C’s of diamond quality.
Cut– Determines the brilliance and sparkle of a diamond
Color – Color grade range from D (COLORLESS) to Z (YELLOW): less color command higher pricing.
Clarity– Determines internal and external grading characteristics
Carat – The carat weight of the diamond.
The History of the 4Cs can be found here.

Importance of Independent Certification (Lab Grading)
Reputable lab-grown diamond suppliers should provide independent diamond grading reports for gemstones of quality. A misnomer often used for lab grading reports is frequently referred as a “certificate or certified” report. However, the proper name is a – lab grading report. You will NOT find anywhere on an actual lab grading report from GIA the words – “certified” or “certificate.” GIA does not certify gemstones – they simply grade them in a manner that is independent and unbiased.
In my opinion, the most trusted and widely known gemological laboratory is the independent gemological laboratory called the “Gemological Institute of America” (GIA). The GIA is known as “The World’s Foremost Authority in Gemology.” Only insist on the best.

What the Certification or Lab Report Provides
- The gemstone is what is truly described as, i.e. color, clarity, etc.
- The gemstone is natural or lab-grown
- Accurate 4C’s grading
- Treatments or enhancements
Lastly, always purchase lab-grown diamonds with a lab grading report to ensure you are getting exactly what you pay for.
