Fancy Colored Diamonds – At Villarreal Fine Jewelers, we understand the profound stories and historical significance that accompany truly exceptional pieces like The Mellon Blue Diamond, a 9.51-carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond. The Mellon Blue, is set to headline an upcoming auction in Geneva this November. Graded as Internally Flawless and mounted in a ring, the stone will be offered during Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues on November 11, 2025. The diamond will be on public display in Hong Kong from October 23 to 28 before the sale. It will then be exhibited in Geneva from November 7 to 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, ahead of the auction. (Source reference – Jewellry Business Magazine – Sept. 11, 2025)

The diamond carries an estimated value of $20 to $30 million USD. Its history traces back to Rachel Lambert Mellon—widely known as Bunny Mellon (1910–2014)—an American horticulturist, philanthropist, and art collector. Mellon acquired the gem decades ago when it was set as a pendant. The piece last appeared publicly in 2014, when it was sold in New York and ranked among the highest-priced colored diamonds ever auctioned. Read More

What Are Fancy Colored Diamonds?

Fancy colored natural diamonds are diamonds that come in a wide range of colors other than the typical white or colorless. They are natural diamonds that have been formed in the earth and possess a distinct body color. The Natural Diamond Council, in partnership with Choron Group and the Fancy Color Research Foundation, has released a report on these diamonds, exploring the science behind their formation, analyzing their value factors, and examining their rise as symbols of wealth and artistry.

Some examples of fancy-colored natural diamonds include:

  • Fancy Yellow (FY): These are quite common among fancy colors. Joseph R. Villarreal has sold numerous Fancy Yellow Diamonds over the years. The most popular shapes include Radiant-cut, Cushion-cut and Oval-cut brilliants.
  • Fancy Blue: A notable example is “The Mellon Blue,” a 9.51-carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond graded Internally Flawless [article].
  • Fancy Pink: These are considered very rare and expensive. There’s mention of even treated pink diamonds being rare and out of budget for most customers.
  • Cognac or Champagne: Joseph R. Villarreal has inquired about natural round diamonds in Cognac or Champagne colors, specifically in the 2.0 to 2.90 carat weight range.
  • Other colors: Vendors offer a “kaleidoscope of incredible colors” including pink, blue, yellow, and green fancy-colored natural diamonds.
The price of colored diamonds is primarily based on their color. The rarity of natural-colored diamonds, especially matching ones, can lead to a premium price.
